The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

Security Incidents for 04/11/07

Baghdad:

(update from yesterday) At least 20 suspected gunmen were killed in a fierce day-long battle between U.S. and Iraqi troops in central Baghdad on Tuesday in which 16 U.S. soldiers were also wounded, the U.S. military said on Wednesday. Residents of Fadhil district, a violent Sunni insurgent stronghold on the east bank of the Tigris River and the scene of Tuesday's fighting, held funeral processions to bury the bodies of 15 men at the nearby Adhamiya cemetery. U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Garver said an estimated 20 gunmen had been killed. An Iraqi policeman at the nearby al-Numan hospital said the hospital had received 30 people with wounds of varying severity.

Baghdad - 21 gunmen were killed and 67 suspected militants were arrested by Iraqi security forces in several areas in Baghdad, during the past 24 hours, under the Baghdad law-imposing plan, the Baghdad operations command said on Wednesday.

U.S. forces killed an insurgent, detained 13 others and destroyed several weapons caches during a five-day operation in the Arab Jibour area of southern Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

Gunmen killed Abdul Abbas Hashim, a general director in the Electricity Ministry, along with his driver in a drive-by shooting in northern Baghdad, police and the Electricity Ministry said.

Police said they found the bodies of nine people shot on Tuesday in different districts of Baghdad

Separately, two people were wounded when U.S. military vehicles ran over three civilian cars in the Ghadeer neighborhood in eastern the capital, according to the source. Two more civilian cars were also damaged in the same way in Baghdad's central neighborhood of Karradah without causing casualties, said the source. The U.S. military was not immediately available to confirm the two incidents.

An MND-B Soldier died and two others were wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated near their patrol in an eastern section of the Iraqi capital April 11.

BAGHDAD - Two mortar rounds landed in two districts in southern and eastern Baghdad, killing one person and wounding four others on Tuesday, police said.

Baghdad- Unknown gunmen shot and killed a teacher while leaving his school in al-Amil neighborhood, western Baghdad, on Wednesday afternoon, a police source said.

Baghdad - At least three civilians were wounded on Wednesday when a mortar shell landed on a residential area in a village near al-Wahda district, 30 km southeast of Baghdad, a security source said.

Hilla:

South of the capital, a roadside bomb attack killed one policeman and wounded another three as they were patrolling the Shiite city of Hilla, said police Lieutenant Hamid Al Khalidi.

Kut:

Gunmen killed two policemen outside their homes in two separate incidents in Kut, 170 km (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad, police said.

Kut - Six suspected gunmen were arrested during crackdown operations by security forces in Karimiyah region in western Kut, 180 km southeast of Baghdad, a security source in Wassit province said on Wednesday.

Basra:

The British base at Basra international airport came under two attack with indirect fire over night with no reports of damage, the Multi-National forces in southern Iraq said on Wednesday.

Diala- The forensic department at Khalis hospital received five unidentified bodies bearing marks of torture, a medical source said on Wednesday.

Kirkuk- Iraqi police forces arrested a photographer working for an armed group while filming an attack on a police patrol in central Kirkuk, 250 km northeast of Baghdad, a police source said on Wednesday.

Mosul:

An Iraqi mother and her school-age son were killed on Wednesday in crossfire between police officers and gunmen in the country’s third city of Mosul, police said. Major Mohammed Ahmed said the incident happened in a western suburb of Mosul,

A roadside bomb also ripped through a police patrol in Mosul’s central Al Shifa district, wounding 13 people, including three policemen, police said.

A policeman was killed and eight people, including two policemen, were wounded when an explosive charge was detonated on Wednesday morning in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, a police source said.

The bodies of four women and three Iraqi soldiers were found dumped with a bullet to the head in various parts of Mosul

MOSUL - Police found nine bodies, including one of a woman, carrying signs of torture and bullet wounds in different parts of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

Unknown gunmen blew up a policeman's house in Falluja city, 45 km west of Baghdad, on Wednesday, while police patrols found six unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the city, a security source said.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS

The political movement of anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr threatened to pull out of government in protest against its failure to set a timetable for a U.S. troop withdrawal.

The U.S. military said that for the third month in a row, civilian casualties have declined in Baghdad but that from January to March there has been an increase in civilian casualties across Iraq.
