SECURITY INCIDENTS FOR JULY 28, 2007

Baghdad - A kidnapping victim was released with his car, only to have it explode when he attempted to drive through a police checkpoint, killing him and injuring two Iraqi police officers. This happened on Friday. In the central neighborhood of Karada, where a vehicle bomb exploded Thursday in a crowded market, workers removed four more bodies from the rubble, bringing the death toll to 42. At least 62 people were injured.

Baghdad - Iraqi journalist Adnan Al-Safi was shot Wednesday on his way to work and remained in a coma until his death Friday, Iraq Press Watch said Saturday. Al-Safi was chairman of the Islamic Journalism Society and correspondent for the Anwaar satellite channel.

BAGHDAD - A car bomb killed four people and wounded 22 others in Uqba Bin Nafie square in eastern Baghdad, police said. [Later report said one of the injured had died. – dancewater]

BAGHDAD - A mortar bomb wounded four people in the Hay al-Amil area of southwestern Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - U.S. forces arrested 16 suspected insurgents during raids in central and northern Iraq on Saturday, the U.S. military said.

YOUSIFIYA - A roadside bomb killed one Iraqi soldier and wounded three others between Yousifiya and Mahmudiya, south of Baghdad, police said.

ISKANDARIYA - Gunmen killed one person in Iskandariya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, on Friday, police said.

ISKANDARIYA - A bomb killed a woman and wounded another person in Iskandariya on Friday, police said.

MUSSAYAB - A roadside bomb killed two women and wounded another person in Mussayab, 60 km (40 miles) south of Baghdad, on Friday, police said.

Kut – Clashes were reported on Friday between gunmen and US forces in Kut.

Hilla – Two women were killed and one man injured by explosive device went off. This bomb caused damage to several houses in al-Sidda district.

Mosul – Two policeman were killed by unidentified gunmen. There is a gang of men robbing cell phone shops in the al-Majmoah al-Thaqfiyah neighborhoods.

Mosul – Four persons were killed, including two policemen, and three more injured on Friday in two separate attacks in northern Mosul.

Basra – Two gunman killed in clashes with MNF in the northern end of Basra on Friday night. Also, all British camps in Basra came under indirect fire attacks during the past 24 hours, with no casualties reported.

Baaquba - An Iraqi army official source said on Saturday that Qaeda fighters and allied armed groups have been gathering in Himrein mounts after they fled Baaquba as Operation Arrowhead Ripper in Diala province entered its second phase. Reliable intelligence indicated that 200-300 gunmen left Baaquba to various areas in Kirkuk and Salah al-Dein provinces and they are gathering now to launch an attack." The army source pointed out that Himrein mounts are topographically a difficult area for movement and rich in caves.
