The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

Reported security incidents
#1: Gunmen attacked an outpost of a government-sponsored militia in western Afghanistan and killed 10 members of the security force, officials said Thursday. Militants armed with assault rifles stormed the outpost of the militia known as the Afghan Local Police late Wednesday in Farah province's Khaki Safed district, said provincial police chief Shamsul Rahman Zahid. They shot a guard who was posted outside, then pushed into the compound and opened fire on those inside, said Abdul Khaliq Noorzai, the district administrator. Another two militia members were dragged outside and shot dead, said Zahid. Four militiamen survived the attack, he said.

#2: A suicide bomber killed two people and injured six others in Kisham district in northern Afghan province of Badakhshan on Thursday, district chief Abdul Salam Paiman said. "A suicide bombing happened next to a girls' school in Kisham district today, killing two people including a civilian and a commander of local police and injuring six others, all civilians," Paiman told Xinhua. He added that the attacker walked towards the police commander namely Nazik Mir, and blew himself up. Meanwhile, Faizul Rahman Ahmadi, the head of health department in Kisham district, said that 17 wounded civilians had been taken to hospital for medical treatment.

#3: At least three security personnel were killed and two others injured in a bomb blast in Pakistan's southwest province of Balochistan on Thursday, reported local Urdu TV channel DAWN. The blast took place at noon in Basht area of Turbet, a city in the southwestern tip of Balochistan.

#4: Afghan defense ministry officials following a press release on Thursday announced, at least 9 Afghan National Army soldiers were killed and injured in various incidents across the country. The source further added, at least 3 Afghan National Army soldiers were killed and 6 others were injured while performing their duties. The statement did not disclose further information regarding the exact location where Afghan National Army soldiers were killed and injured.

#5: In the meantime local security officials in eastern Ghazni province announced at least 6 Taliban militants were killed and injured during military operations in this province. Gen. Wafadar commander of the Afghan National Army for 203 Thunder Battalion said, at least 5 Taliban militants were killed and 1 Taliban militant was injured during the military operation at Khogyani district.

#6: According to local authorities in southern Kandahar province, armed militants shot dead security control chief for 404 Maiwand police commandment in this province. The officials further added, the incident took place around 12:00 pm local time. In the meantime Provincial governor spokesman Jawid Faisal confirming the incident said, unknown militants shot dead a police officer but denied reports suggesting security chief for 404 Maiwand police commandment was killed. But a provincial security official speaking on the condition of anonymity said, the deceased police officer was Yar Mohammad Amiri security control chief for 404 Maiwand police commandment.
